Daily fantasy & pick'em

What DFS pick'em contests are, how their over/under player lines compare to sportsbook fair value, and where the edge in a Power or Flex slip comes from.

What pick'em DFS is

Daily fantasy pick'em contests — PrizePicks, Underdog, and similar — ask you to predict whether a player will go over or under a posted stat line: points, rebounds, passing yards. You combine several of these picks into a slip, and the slip pays a fixed multiple of your entry if enough of them hit. It looks like fantasy, but mechanically each pick is a player-prop over/under bet, and a slip is a parlay.

That framing is the key to finding an edge. Every pick'em line has a true probability of going over, just like a sportsbook prop. If the pick'em site posts a line that the wider sportsbook market prices differently, one side of that pick'em line carries positive expected value.

Where the edge comes from

SmartStake prices each pick'em line against a fair, no-vig number derived from sportsbook odds — the same fair-value engine behind Positive EV. When a pick'em line lags the market, the favourable side is a +EV pick; stack enough genuinely +EV picks and the slip's expected return turns positive.

The two common slip types shape the math. A Power slip pays a large multiple but needs every leg to hit. A Flex slip pays less at the top but still returns something if one or two legs miss, trading peak payout for a softer landing. Which is better depends on the edge and hit-rate of the legs you've chosen, not on a blanket rule.

From concept to tool

See Fantasy optimizer overview for the tool, and Building Power & Flex slips for break-even and expected-multiplier math across tiers.

Because a slip is a parlay, its variance is high — a +EV slip still loses often. The same bankroll and staking discipline that governs +EV betting applies here.
