Outlier Alternative and Review 2026: Research vs Real Edge

SmartStake is the best Outlier alternative in 2026 for bettors who want positive EV, arbitrage, pick'em, and a bet tracker in one plan. Our full review.

SmartStake Team·October 27, 2026·11 min read
A woman reclines along a steep green line ribbon arcing upward as the central mass, while a man sits inside an open browser window to its left comparing two floating donut charts he cradles in each hand, a third figure drifts weightless threading a glowing coin through looping wires, basketballs and tilted bar-chart slices orbiting over soft rounded negative-space blobs.

SmartStake is the best Outlier alternative in 2026 for bettors who want to find and size an edge, not just research one. Here is the honest short version.

Outlier is a polished, well-rated sports betting research app. Its trends, injury reports, and line movement start at $19.99 a month, and its Pro plan adds a positive EV feed, arbitrage, and middles at $79.99.

SmartStake starts from the edge. Positive EV, arbitrage, and middles sit next to a pick'em optimizer, smart money signals, a promo converter, and a bet tracker that scores your closing line value, all in one plan.

This Outlier review is not a takedown. It lays out what each plan includes and where each platform wins, so you can choose on facts.

Please note: Outlier's facts below were read on October 27, 2026 from its own site, App Store, and Google Play listings. Pricing for both platforms changes, so confirm the live figure before you subscribe. No tool places bets for you or promises a winning one, and every edge below is a long-run average with real variance.

Why Bettors Look for an Outlier Alternative

Outlier answers the research question well: what is trending, who is hurt, and where has the line moved? Its boards cover thousands of player props and game lines, with heatmap style trends, supporting stats, and injury reports in context.

It sends you to the bet fast, too. Outlier compares prices across books and prediction markets and places bets at FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, or Caesars in two clicks.

The friction shows up at the next question: is this bet worth taking at this price? On Premium, Outlier has no answer. Premium+ adds EV+ indicators, and only Pro unlocks the Positive EV Power Feed and the sharp book odds that the answer rests on.

That is the gap SmartStake fills. A fair price on the bet, the edge in percent, and a stake size, in a plan that also tracks whether your edge is real.

Try It: Expected Value Against the Plan's Price

A positive EV plan's price is weighed against volume. Set a sharp sportsbook's two prices and the price a soft book offers on your side, then drag your stake and how many bets like it you place a month.

The widget devigs the sharp pair, prices the expected value at the soft book, and counts how many such bets it takes to match the price of the plan you pick.

How many +EV bets match the plan's price?

Enter a sharp sportsbook's two prices and the price a soft book offers on your side. Then set your stake, how many bets like it you place a month, and the plan that finds them.

Expected value per bet+$1.44
Bets like this to match $9969
Expected value of 100 bets+$144.16
Expected value minus the plan
+$45.16Above

Illustrative only, not a prediction of any result. The fair chance devigs the sharp pair multiplicatively, the Devigging Calculator's default, and the expected value is the same formula the Positive EV tool's line history chart uses. Plan prices are each company's listed monthly price as of October 27, 2026, with SmartStake Premium rounded to about $99. Expected value is a long-run average, and any month or any single bet can still win or lose.

At the defaults, the sharp book's −112 / −108 devigs to a 50.43% fair chance (−102). A soft book's +104 on that side carries +2.88% expected value, or about $1.44 on a $50 bet.

In this illustrative example, 100 bets like it a month average about $144.16 in expected value, $45.16 more than SmartStake Premium's price of about $99. Switch the plan to Outlier Pro and it takes 56 such bets to match $79.99, against 69 for SmartStake Premium.

Now drag the bets slider to 30. Every plan with a positive EV feed now costs more than the bets' expected value, since $43.25 sits below $79.99 and $99. Any single month can still finish well above or below those averages.

What the Math Says About Any EV Plan

Here's the thing. The price of the plan matters less than two numbers you control: how many real edges you bet, and how big they are.

Implied, your side = 112 / 212 = 52.83% Implied, other side = 108 / 208 = 51.92% Fair, your side = 52.83% / 104.75% = 50.43% EV at +104 = 2.04 × 50.43% − 1 = +2.88% EV per $50 bet = $50 × 2.88% = $1.44 Bets to match $99 = $99 / $1.44 = 69

A cheaper plan needs fewer bets to match its price, and Outlier Pro is $19 cheaper than SmartStake Premium. That is a real advantage for a bettor who places a few dozen +EV bets a month.

The other lever is how many edges the plan can find. A feed that reads more books surfaces more prices like that +104, and it keeps finding them after a book limits you. The line shopping guide shows why every extra book matters, and the devigging guide explains the fair price step.

If you would rather check one bet by hand, the free expected value calculator and devigging calculator run the same math.

Outlier Review: Plans, Prices, and Features

Outlier sells three plans, and the edge tools sit only at the top. Each plan below lists what Outlier's own plan page includes.

Outlier's site marks those prices as billed upfront for a year, with annual plans saving 2 months. Its App Store listing shows Premium at $199.99 a year, Premium+ at $299.99, and Pro at $359.99, with monthly entries of $19.99, $29.99, and $79.99 (one Pro entry reads $99.99). Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial.

Pro now bundles a second app, React Live, which Outlier describes as real-time AI Bet Signals with live odds and game context. The App Store lists NBA, NFL, NHL, college basketball and football, MLB, WNBA, and soccer coverage.

The app is well liked. It holds 4.9 stars from about 17,000 App Store ratings and 4.8 stars on Google Play, and it runs on the web as well.

Strategy Coverage, Head to Head

Now the comparison. A check mark means a full, dedicated feature, and Outlier's column is its top Pro plan.

The overlap sits in Pro. Both platforms run a positive EV feed with sharp book pricing, an arbitrage feed, middles, and boost math, so on the core finding tools the two meet.

The split is everywhere else. Outlier's core is research: trends, injuries, matchups, and line history. SmartStake's core is pricing: the SmartStake Line or your own Custom blend of sharp books, five devig methods, and a smart money feed built on exchange order books.

Price runs in Outlier's favor. Premium at $19.99 is less than half SmartStake's $49 Fantasy plan, and Pro at $79.99 undercuts SmartStake Premium at about $99. Outlier's trial is two days longer, too.

Breadth runs the other way. SmartStake reads 70+ books, exchanges, and DFS apps, and its Premium plan adds a pick'em optimizer, smart money, a promo converter, and a tracker Outlier does not sell. The plans and pricing docs list what each SmartStake plan includes.

Where Outlier Is Genuinely Better

Three things, and they are worth saying plainly so this comparison is trustworthy.

Outlier is cheaper. $19.99 a month buys the research app, and $79.99 adds the full edge suite. SmartStake has nothing at $19.99, and its full plan costs about $19 more.

Outlier is a research tool, and SmartStake is not. SmartStake has no trend boards, no hit-rate pages, and no injury report screen. If you build a case for a bet from stats and news, Outlier does that well and SmartStake does not try to.

Outlier is easy to use. Its 4.9 star App Store rating across about 17,000 ratings reflects a clean, fast mobile design. Two-click placement at four major books is a real convenience.

Where SmartStake Wins

If Outlier is cheaper and does research SmartStake skips, why do bettors move? Three reasons, and the first is the one the widget showed.

More edges to bet. A plan's price is weighed against the edges it finds. SmartStake's Positive EV tool prices bets across 70+ books with the SmartStake Line or your own blend of sharp books, pregame and live, and lets you fold a sportsbook profit boost into any bet.

The Arbitrage Finder runs live as well. The positive EV guide explains why a wider net of books finds more bets worth taking.

A bet tracker that judges your edge, not just charts it. Outlier sells no tracker. SmartStake tracks a bet in one tap when you take it from one of its tools, and grades moneyline, spread, total, and player-prop bets automatically when the game ends.

Its Performance dashboard scores closing line value on pre-game bets in tracked leagues, then adds edge-significance, variance, and calibration reads that estimate whether your results are skill or a lucky run. The bet tracking guide shows the workflow.

One plan instead of a stack of tools. SmartStake Premium adds a pick'em optimizer that grades every pick against a slip's break-even, a smart money feed, and a step-by-step promo converter. The converter turns a sportsbook sign-up offer into a two-sided matched bet that aims to keep most of the offer's value.

Sign-up offers are usually new-customer only, matched bets are never truly without risk (odds shift, and books can limit or void legs), and you should use only disposable income. The sign-up promotions 101 guide is the place to start.

And because every calculator is free, a free account opens the read-only Odds Screen, the Fantasy tool is free to signed-in accounts on Tuesdays, and new accounts get a 5-day free trial, you can test the whole workflow before paying for anything.

Who Should Switch, and Who Should Not

Match the tool to how you bet.

  • Choose SmartStake if you bet positive EV, arbitrage, or middles and want the most books behind every feed, want pick'em, smart money, promos, and a tracker in the same plan, or want analytics that read whether your edge is real.
  • Stay with Outlier if you build bets from trends, injuries, and matchups, mostly bet at FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, or Caesars, and the lower price is the deciding factor.
  • Not sure? Try both. Outlier's trial runs 7 days and SmartStake's runs 5, so you can run the widget's math on your own volume before you pay for either.

And remember what is true of both. Each platform finds information and prices. Neither places bets for you, and neither can promise a winning one. Positive EV is a long-term approach built on small margins, variance, and bankroll management.

How SmartStake Compares to the Rest of the Field

Outlier is one natural head-to-head, but it is not the only tool worth knowing.

The best EV betting software breakdown ranks ten platforms, Outlier included, on coverage, speed, and price. The OddsJam alternative and Unabated alternative cover the two other big edge platforms.

If research is what you liked about Outlier, the PickFinder alternative compares another prop research app, and the Prop Professor alternative covers a props-first EV tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Outlier alternative in 2026? SmartStake is the best Outlier alternative in 2026 for bettors who want to find and size edges, not just research them. It puts positive EV, arbitrage, middles, a pick'em optimizer, smart money signals, a promo converter, and a bet tracker with closing line value in one plan. Outlier stays the cheaper pick for trends, injury news, and prop research.

How much does Outlier cost? Outlier lists Premium at $19.99 a month, Premium+ at $29.99, and Pro at $79.99, and its site says those prices are billed upfront for a year. Its App Store listing shows yearly terms of $199.99, $299.99, and $359.99, plus monthly entries, one of them Pro at $99.99. Confirm the price at checkout before you subscribe.

Is Outlier free? No, but it has a 7-day free trial, free betting calculators on its site, and free NFL and NBA pages with a few insights per sportsbook. SmartStake's calculators and read-only Odds Screen are free, the Fantasy tool is free to signed-in accounts on Tuesdays, and new accounts get a 5-day free trial of Premium or Fantasy.

Does Outlier have positive EV and arbitrage? Yes, on the Pro plan only. Outlier's Positive EV Power Feed, sharp book odds, arbitrage feed, middles, and boost analysis are all Pro features. Premium+ adds EV+ indicators on its research boards but no EV feed, and Premium has neither.

Does Outlier have a bet tracker? Outlier's plan lists name no bet tracker or performance analytics. SmartStake includes a Bet Tracker that grades bets when the game ends, and its Performance dashboard scores closing line value and estimates whether your results are skill or a lucky run.

Is Outlier worth it? Outlier is worth it if you research props and pregame lines and like its trends and injury data, since Premium starts at $19.99 a month. For positive EV, weigh the plan's price against the expected value of the bets you place: at an illustrative +2.88% on $50 stakes, Pro's $79.99 takes 56 such bets a month to match, and individual bets can still win or lose.

The Bottom Line

Outlier is a polished, low-cost research app, and it wins on price, ease of use, and trend and injury data. A bettor who builds bets from research at the four biggest books has a real case to stay.

SmartStake answers the question research cannot: is this bet worth taking at this price, and is your edge real? It prices bets across 70+ books, pregame and live, and bundles arbitrage, pick'em, smart money, a promo converter, and a tracker that scores closing line value in one plan. For bettors who want the edge behind the bet, that is why the switch makes sense.
