What is Hold in Sports Betting?

Hold (also called "vig" or "juice") is the sportsbook's built-in profit margin. It's calculated by adding the implied probabilities of both sides of a bet — if they total more than 100%, the difference is the hold. Hold ranges vary by market. Lower hold lines (under 2-3%) can be useful candidates for promo conversion and matched betting.

Why Low Hold Matters

When working with sportsbook promotions (“free bets,” deposit matches, “no sweat bets”), you hedge your promo bet against another sportsbook. The lower the combined hold between the two bets, the less of the spread is given up to the sportsbooks' margin. A negative combined hold may indicate a candidate arbitrage opportunity at the time of measurement.

Finding Low Hold Lines

Compare odds across multiple sportsbooks to find combined lines with lower hold. Use this calculator to check the hold, then pair it with our Free Bet Calculator or “No Sweat Bet” Calculator to estimate your conversion math.
