Where Is PrizePicks Legal? Every State, Every Pick Type

PrizePicks is legal in most of the US, but what you can play depends on your state and on the pick type. Player Picks, the classic More or Less lineup, runs in 36 states plus Washington, D.C.

Team Picks and Culture Picks are event contracts, sold under federal rules, and they reach a different set of states. Two states get no real money picks at all.

Where PrizePicks Is Legal: The Short Answer

PrizePicks now sells four kinds of product, and each one has its own state list:

PrizePicks' page gives different totals for Team Picks and Culture Picks in different places, so the table gives the range. The checker above uses the page's written state lists and flags the 3 places where its own table disagrees.

Why the Map Has Two Layers

Player Picks and Team Picks look alike in the app, but they sit under different laws. That split explains almost every odd result in the checker.

Player Picks is daily fantasy, so state law decides. Each state sets its own rules for paid fantasy contests. A state that does not allow PrizePicks' format, or has not licensed it, gets no Player Picks.

Team Picks and Culture Picks are event contracts, so federal rules apply. PrizePicks sells them through PrizePicks Predict, which it describes as a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant (FCM) and NFA member.

An event contract pays $1 if an outcome happens and nothing if it does not, like the contracts on Kalshi.

That is why Hawaii, Idaho, and Montana list Team Picks but no Player Picks, and why Pennsylvania and Michigan list Culture Picks only.

The event contract layer is not settled either. Several states and courts dispute whether sports contracts escape state gambling law, which are prediction markets legal tracks court by court.

Player Picks: Where It Runs and How It Works Now

The Player Picks states

As of October 25, 2026, PrizePicks lists Player Picks in 36 states plus D.C. It does not list Player Picks in these 14 states:

• Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan
• Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington

New York, California, Texas, and Florida all have Player Picks. The checker shows the rest with their minimum ages.

Player Picks is peer-to-peer everywhere

Older guides, including the first version of this one, split states into house-banked pick'em and a peer-to-peer format called Arena. That split is gone.

PrizePicks now describes Player Picks itself as a multiplayer competition where you face off against a group of your peers.

When you submit, your lineup joins a group with the same number of picks, a similar experience level, and games at similar times. PrizePicks lists the group sizes:

Experience comes in 3 levels: Rookie (50 or fewer contests), All-Star (50 to 500), and Superstar (over 500 contests, or a record of large prizes). PrizePicks says Rookies always play together and that it does not use bots to fill groups.

The payouts did not change

The peer-to-peer label did not change the price. PrizePicks says every payout is set in advance and shown on your details screen before you submit, and never depends on how many people enter.

Its standard rates are still the familiar ones: a 6-pick Power Play pays 37.5x, and a 6-pick Flex pays 25x for 6 of 6, 2x for 5, and 0.4x for 4.

Team Picks and Culture Picks: The Event Contract Layer

Team Picks cover game winners, spreads, totals, and futures. Culture Picks cover events outside sports. Both work like exchange contracts, not like a fantasy lineup:

• Price. Each contract costs between $0 and $1, and the price moves with demand. Your entry fee buys as many whole contracts as it covers.
• Fee. PrizePicks charges a service fee of $0.005 to $0.02 per contract when you buy or sell, rounded up to the cent. Holding to the close adds no fee.
• Selling early. You can sell before the event ends at the contract's current value, minus the fee.

PrizePicks also lets you add eligible Team Picks to a Player Picks lineup, as long as the lineup keeps at least 2 Player Picks and 6 picks in total. It treats the two parts as separate transactions under separate rules.

The States With No Real Money Picks

Nevada and Washington get no real money picks at all, as of October 25, 2026. PrizePicks lists neither Player Picks, Team Picks, nor Culture Picks in either state.

Both still get Packs and free to play contests, which PrizePicks offers in all 50 states plus D.C.

A few states get one layer but not the other:

• Culture Picks only: Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
• Event contracts but no Player Picks: Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, and Montana list both Team and Culture Picks. Louisiana and New Jersey list Culture Picks, and PrizePicks' table shows Team Picks there too.
• Player Picks but no event contracts: Arizona and New York.

How Old You Have to Be

PrizePicks sets the age by state and by pick type:

Every other listed state is 18+. The checker shows the age for each pick type in your state.

How to Check Your State in 30 Seconds

The checker shows PrizePicks' published list, but the list changes, so confirm it directly:

1. Open the PrizePicks app or website from the state you are in.
2. Look for the Player, Team, and Culture boards.
3. The boards you can use appear. The rest stay hidden or block your entry.

PrizePicks reads your physical location, not your home address. If you travel, your boards change with you: a lineup you could build at home may be blocked across a state line.

Is PrizePicks Legal or Just Available?

People blur two questions together. One is whether PrizePicks is available to you, which the app answers by geolocation. The other is whether a format is legal in a formal sense, and that is still being argued for event contracts in several states.

For playing day to day, availability is what matters, and PrizePicks enforces it for you. For the bigger legal question, treat it as fluid, follow your state regulator's guidance, and remember that nothing here is legal advice.

Playing Smart Wherever You Are

Legality tells you whether you can play. It says nothing about whether a lineup is worth playing.

That comes down to the math, and the math is the same in every Player Picks state: a lineup is worth entering only when your real chance on each pick clears the break-even its payout demands.

Here is the default worked through, as an illustration. A 6-pick Flex breaks even at 54.21% per pick. If every pick truly wins 56% of the time, the lineup returns about $117.60 per $100 on average over many entries.

At a coin flip, 50%, the same lineup returns about $67.19, a loss of nearly a third of the entry fee. Any single lineup can still win or lose.

Is PrizePicks the same as sports betting?

PrizePicks says it is not a gambling website. How the law sees it depends on the pick type. Player Picks is offered as a daily fantasy contest under state fantasy laws.
