A teaser hands you free points, and the price takes them straight back. Move two NFL spreads 6 points your way and a book will usually lay you around −110 to −130 on the pair, which means each leg now has to win roughly 72% to 75% of the time instead of the 52.4% a normal spread needs. That is a brutal bar, and the whole question of teaser betting is whether the points you bought can clear it.
They sometimes can. Not because points are cheap, but because football margins are lumpy, and 6 points taken from the right place cross far more of the distribution than 6 points taken from the wrong place.

The default state is a two team 6 point teaser at −120 where one leg is 6 points weaker than the other, and it prints Below the break even. Drag the weakness slider to 0 and the same ticket scrapes back over the line. That gap is the article.
A teaser is a parlay with the lines moved. You pick two or more spreads or totals, the book shifts every one of them a fixed number of points in your favor, and in exchange it pays you far less than the parlay would have paid.
The football standard is 6 points, with 6.5 and 7 point versions priced worse. Basketball teasers usually move 4 to 5 points. The other half of the deal never changes: every leg still has to win. One loss and the ticket is dead, exactly as in a straight parlay.
A typical two team NFL 6 point teaser:

Both look far easier. They are also both being paid for out of the same pot, and the pot is much smaller than it was.
Here is the one piece of arithmetic that makes teasers legible. A price of in decimal odds breaks even when the whole ticket wins one over of the time. If the legs are independent and you rate them all the same, each leg has to clear the -th root of that:
A two team teaser at −110 is decimal 1.909, so the ticket needs 52.38% and each leg needs the square root of 0.5238, which is 72.37%.
Now run the same formula down a standard teaser payout ladder:

Look at the right hand column. The payouts differ by a factor of two, the number of legs doubles, and the bar per leg moves by roughly a third of a point. The classic teaser ladder is priced to a near constant per leg break even of about 72.4%.
That is worth sitting with, because it collapses the decision. Adding legs does not make a teaser better or worse value, it only makes it swingier. There is exactly one question, asked once per leg: does this leg clear about 72%? If it does, the ladder does not care how many of them you stack. If it does not, no amount of stacking rescues it.
A spread laid at −110 breaks even at 52.38%. The same leg inside a two team teaser at −110 has to reach 72.37%. Subtract, and the requirement is stark.
The 6 teased points have to add 20.0 points of win probability. That is 3.33 points of probability for every point you move the line.
At −120 the requirement climbs to 21.5 points, or 3.58 per point. At −130 it is 22.8 points, or 3.80 per point. Move the price 20 cents and you have added most of another key number's worth of work to the same 6 points.
Here is why that matters. If football margins were smooth, each point would be worth roughly the same and the trade would be close to a coin flip against the price. They are not smooth. Most points are worth well under 3 percentage points, and a small handful are worth far more.
NFL games are decided by 3 points more often than by any other margin, and by 7 more often than by anything except 3. Those two numbers are where the whole play lives.
The shape most large samples show, rounded, is roughly this:

Exact figures move with the sample and with rule changes, so treat these as the shape rather than as constants. The shape is the part that holds: a cluster at 3, a second one at 7, and thin ground either side.
Now compare three different 6 point windows on the same favorite. Each window is the band of margins the tease newly wins for you.

Same 6 points, same price, same 20 point requirement, and only the first one gets there. The first window contains both 3 and 7. The second contains 10 and 14. The third contains nothing anyone plays for.
That is the whole thesis in one table. A teaser is not a bet on points. It is a bet on which points.
The analyst Stanford Wong published the obvious consequence: on a 6 point NFL teaser, take only the starting numbers whose window swallows both 3 and 7.
Both sides are the same trade viewed from opposite ends. The favorite side buys the margins 3 through 7 or 8. The dog side buys the margins it can now lose by, 3 through 7 or 8. Either way you are paying 6 points to collect the two fattest numbers on the board.
Notice that every number in that window is a half point, and that is deliberate. Start at −8.5 and you land on −2.5. Start at −7.5 and you land on −1.5. Both teased lines are half points, so the leg either wins or loses and there is no third outcome.
Start from a whole −8 instead and 6 points puts you on −2, where a 2 point win is neither a cover nor a loss. Books handle that differently: some reduce the teaser to its remaining legs, some grade the whole ticket a loss, and the rule lives in the house terms rather than on the bet slip.

A 23 to 21 final is a 2 point win, which pushes. Nudge the winning score to 24 and it covers. On a −2.5 teased line that same 2 point win is simply a loss, which is cleaner to reason about and is why the classic window is quoted in half points. The Wong window has been public for decades, and books read too. The math never stopped working. The price moved instead, and the price is doing all the deciding.
Take a pair of legs that win 76% of the time, an illustrative rate rather than a measured one, and run them across the prices you actually see quoted:

Nothing about the football changed down that column. The edge falls by more than half between −110 and −120, is nearly gone by −130, and turns negative just past −140. Many books now price two team 6 point teasers at −120 or −130 by default, and some restrict teasing through key numbers or exclude games entirely.
So the honest answer to whether Wong teasers still work is that they work at a price and not at a price, the margin was never large, and the number on your screen decides which side of that line you are on. Shopping the teaser price is worth more here than almost anywhere else, for the same reason line shopping pays generally: the entire edge is smaller than the spread between books.
These figures are illustrative and derived from the prices printed beside them. They describe long run averages across many identical tickets, not a forecast for any single bet, and any teaser can still lose. Nothing here is a way to produce reliable income, so stake only money you can afford to lose.
Teaser legs multiply, they do not average. So the ticket is judged on the geometric mean of its legs, and a geometric mean is dragged down by its worst member far harder than an average is.

Every rate in that table is an illustrative estimate, and every result is a long run average across many identical tickets rather than a forecast for one.
The third row is the one to remember. Leg A is a textbook Wong leg. Leg B is only 8 points worse. Together they are a losing bet, because 71.89% sits under the 72.37% bar.
The fourth row is worse still: an outstanding 80% leg cannot carry a 65% partner. If you only have one qualifying leg, you do not have a teaser. There is no version of this where adding a leg you like less improves a ticket you like.
Everything above assumes the legs are independent, and two legs out of the same game are not. A team covering a teased spread and that game going over a teased total move together, so the real chance both land is not the product of the two.
That is not a small correction. The same effect drives the pricing of a same game parlay, where the correlation premium can be worth tens of points of expected value in either direction. Many books restrict same game teasers precisely because the standard ladder misprices them. If you build one anyway, price it as a correlated parlay, not with the table on this page.

Start anywhere else on the board, accept a −130 price, or bolt on a leg you do not love, and the same bet quietly becomes a bad one.
