A Guide to MLB Matched Betting Risk

Navigate MLB matched betting complexities and minimize risks from sportsbook house rules. Expert guide to safe baseball betting strategies.

Matched Betting is an excellent strategy in sports betting, but MLB games present unique risks. One major risk is inconsistent house rules. House rules are the specific guidelines each sportsbook follows for handling bets, and they can differ significantly from one book to another. If one of your bets is voided because of these rules, it might leave you with an unhedged bet, which means you're exposed to more risk than you intended. This guide will help beginners navigate these challenges.

Low-Risk Bets

The safest matched bet is a Listed Pitcher money line, where both sides have the same home and away Listed Pitchers. These bets are consistently treated across sportsbooks, voiding under the same conditions without odds changes.

Not all sportsbooks offer Listed Pitcher money lines. For example, Caesars PA often provides Action bets, while PointsBet usually offers Listed Pitcher bets. Avoid hedging these against each other.

Note: Listed Pitcher bets void with a pitching change. If a Bonus Bet is placed on a voided bet, you may not recover it. This varies by sportsbook.

Medium Risk Bets

Matched bets on money lines, run lines, and totals with Action bets carry some risk.

If both bets are Action, they remain valid and are graded even with a starting pitcher change. Some sportsbooks, like FanDuel and DraftKings, do not adjust odds on Action bets, making them safer to hedge.

FanDuel: Money Line wagers are "Action" and aren't voided with pitcher changes. Wagers settle at placement odds.

DraftKings: Action Bets are team vs. team, regardless of pitchers, locking odds at placement.

However, some sportsbooks might adjust odds if the starting pitcher changes:

  • Bally Bet: Adjusts to new pitcher's opening price.
  • BetFred: May adjust money odds.

If you hedge a FanDuel money line Action bet with a BetFred money line Action bet and the pitcher changes, BetFred may adjust their line, affecting your payout.

High-Risk Bets

Player props, especially batter props, are the riskiest MLB markets for matched betting. House rules often differ on whether a player must start or just appear, risking voided bets.

Example:

  • FanDuel: Bryce Harper over 0.5 Hits
  • DraftKings: Bryce Harper under 0.5 Hits

If Harper pinch-hits and doesn't get a hit, FanDuel grades it as a loss (plate appearance rule), but DraftKings voids it (must start rule), leading to potential losses.

Vague language, like Caesars' "If the named player does not play, the wager will be void," adds risk. Player props are also affected by weather delays and pitcher changes.

Tips to Minimize Risk

  • Match Listed Pitchers on both primary and hedge bets.
  • Use sportsbooks that don't adjust odds on Action bets.
  • Avoid hedging Action with Listed Pitcher bets.
  • Exercise caution with batter props; some bettors avoid them.
  • Don't hedge money lines with run lines due to different innings rules.
  • Check weather forecasts and avoid betting on games with poor weather.
  • Place bets closer to game time to reduce lineup change risks.
  • Know your house rules and avoid sportsbooks with differing rules.

An over under, or total, is two numbers: a combined score line that decides what has to happen, and a price that decides what it pays.
